Redesigned Rock Camp Website
Designed by Plazm and built by Concrete. The R+R Camp for Girls is an fantastic organization that helps build self esteem in girls through music and performance. .
Design-wise, we wanted to make the site
well-organized but fun for both kids and adults and super-flexible for the
camp to update. Concrete used their CMS (content management system) to
make the site easy to edit.
The camp has some great programming
coming up - three sessions of summer camp this year, the most ever - all
sold out - but you can attend the showcases and offer your own support
through tax deductible donations—there's a list of needed items
besides cash there too. Check it out here: http://www.girlsrockcamp.org/

Free Internet Wireless or Corporate Control?
Once again large telecommunication corporations like AT&T, Verizon, and Comcast are attempting to control the public media space—and it appears the US federal government is ready to hand it over to them. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is accepting comments for the next couple of days. Now is the time to act. Moveon.org has a petition that they are planning to submit.
Please take a moment to sign the petition, call or
write the FCC, and most importantly, pass on this information to your
friends and family.
—Plazm
From
www.moveon.org:
"These newly
available airwaves are a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to revolutionize
Internet access—beaming high-speed Internet signals to every park
bench, coffee shop, workplace, and home in America at more affordable
prices than current Internet service. Phone and cable companies don't
want this competition to their Internet service—they'd rather
purchase the airwaves at auction and sit on them.
In June, the
Federal Communications Commission (FCC) will make a major decision: Use
the public airwaves for the public good, or turn them over to big
companies who will stifle competition, innovation, and the wireless
Internet revolution.
To sign the petition + learn more click here
There are many innovative
companies jumping at the opportunity to forge ahead with the wireless
Internet revolution—bringing us high-speed wireless networks from
coast to coast and all sorts of innovative wireless devices. But the old
phone and cable companies are aggressively trying to block this progress.
They've spent billions laying wires, and they enjoy having their customers
locked in with few alternatives.
Without access to the public
airwaves, wireless innovators can't enter the marketplace. So the
strategy of companies like AT&T, Verizon, and Comcast is to buy the
administrative rights of our airwaves at auction—and then use those
rights to block competition. They also stifle the development of new
wireless devices by only letting their own endorsed products work on
their networks.
We're urging the FCC to protect the public good
by setting auction rules that prohibit this anti-competitive behavior. If
the government auctioned off the right to maintain a public highway to
Ford, we would certainly not let Ford block Toyotas from the roads.
Likewise, big phone and cable should not be able to keep innovative
companies off our airwaves.
They also shouldn't be able to
tell their wireless Internet customers which websites they can
access—as they do now. And just as phone companies can't tell
customers what phones can be plugged into a wall jack, cell and wireless
companies should not be able to dictate which
phones or wireless
devices people use on their networks.
The opportunity to
revolutionize the Internet and wireless world is at our fingertips. The
only question is whether our government will embrace it, and whether
regular people will fight for it."

Unprecedented Postal Hike
The Postal Board of Governors recent decision to support an unfair increase in periodical rates will have grave consequences for the free speech that our Founding Fathers struggled to foster when they established the U.S. mail system.
The rate increase was devised by Time Warner -- the largest publisher in
the industry. If implemented, it will have an adverse effect on smaller
periodicals, while easing the postal burden on the largest magazines.
This goes against more than 200 years of postal policy, which has
promoted the spread of diverse periodicals in competitive markets as a
means to foster a free press and inform and engage citizens.
Congress must step in to protect smaller media from new regulations that
would undo this history.
Please join the call for public
hearings to determine how this case was decided in such an unusual and
unorthodox fashion. Before any increases occur, we must ensure they don't
imperil small and independent publications and stifle public discourse in
America.

Plazm knows its ABC's—or at least its X's
Plazm's Joshua Berger was invited to participate in the show "Now I know my ABC's" curated by Wurst Gallery. The show features 26 artists representing a randomly assigned letter from the alphabet.
Berger received the "X." Berger's piece was inpired by a report
in the
New
York Times (October 10, 2006) that a team of American and Iraqi
researchers had estimated over 600,000 civilians have died in violence
across Iraq since the 2003 American invasion. Berger decided that he would
mark and “X” for each civilian life lost. The first piece in
this ongoing series is on display at the ABC show; it represents 7,193
lives. Based on this first page, Berger anticipates that it will take
about one hundred hours of continuous drawing and at least eighty sheets
of paper to complete this project.

Plazm and ConcreteCMS Collaborate to Preserve Natural Spaces
Plazm and Concrete have teamed up to create a web site for the Campaign for Natural Areas, Parks & Streams. The bond measure will be on the November 7th, 2006 ballot in the Portland-metro area.
It directs Metro to protect land around rivers and streams, preserve fish
and wildlife habitat, and restore natural areas. It also includes tough
accountability provisions – including a citizens’ oversight
committee and yearly independent financial audits that must be published
in the newspaper – to ensure the money is spent as promised. We
think these things are extremely valuable.
Together this
November, we can protect our legacy of natural areas and clean water for
future generations.

Debut of the Rubber Vloeren Font
Rubber Vloeren is adapted from a hand-drawn alphabet by Piet Zwart used for a series of advertisements for rubber flooring in the Netherlands. The original ad is pictured above on the right.
The Rubber Vloeren alphabet was used by Zwart on several other
occasions. There's a showing in Dutch Type by Jan Middendorp of the most
spectacular version: a gold-on-blue version on ceramic tiles made for the
First Church of Christ Scientist in The Hague when working for the
architect Berlage. We hope this first digital rendering will find new life
in new places Zwart could have never imagined.
Designed by Ian Lynam @ Wordshape. Thanks, Ian.

The Urban Forest Project announced.
The Urban Forest Project will plant 200 banners by designers, artists, photographers and illustrators from around the world in New York’s Times Square.
Each banner will use the form of the tree, or a metaphor for the tree, to
make a powerful visual statement. Together they’ll create a forest
of thoughtful images in one of the world’s busiest, most energetic
and emphatically urban intersections. We hope that bringing nature and art
to the “Crossroads of the World,” visited by 30 million people
each year and known mainly for its dazzling commercial signage, will
encourage passersby to pause, if only for a moment, to be entertained,
stimulated or provoked by the work.
Plazm's Joshua Berger has
been selected as a participant.
This project is organized by
the
AIGA New York
Chapter,
Times Square Alliance, and
Worldstudio Foundation.
